The cheapest supermarket in the Netherlands, according to the data
On 1 October 2026, Dirk is the supermarket in the Netherlands with the lowest price most often: for 79.7% of the 4,440 products that are also sold at other chains. Hoogvliet follows with 59.6%, DekaMarkt with 43.6%. Lidl, Aldi and Ekoplaza are left out of the comparison because they mostly sell own brands.
This is not an opinion or a mystery shopper with a basket of twenty products. Mandje, the free app that compares your grocery list at 10 Dutch supermarkets, collects the shelf prices of 104,750 products every night, matches identical products across chains and counts which chain is cheapest for each one. Below: the ranking, the winner per category, what the number does and does not say about your shopping, and how to work it out for your own list. New to Dutch supermarkets? The ranking on 1 October 2026
The percentage is the share of price comparisons a chain wins; n is the number of products that percentage rests on. When two chains have the same price, both win.
- 1. Dirk79.7% cheapest, n = 4,440, average discount on offers 34%
- 2. Hoogvliet59.6% cheapest, n = 4,986, average discount on offers 31%
- 3. DekaMarkt43.6% cheapest, n = 6,360, average discount on offers 31%
- 4. Albert Heijn42.7% cheapest, n = 7,889, average discount on offers 30%
- 5. Jumbo41.0% cheapest, n = 7,341, average discount on offers 29%
- 6. Plus36.9% cheapest, n = 7,675, average discount on offers 31%
- 7. Poiesz24.0% cheapest, n = 6,092, average discount on offers 33%
The gap between the leader and the rest is large: Dirk wins 79.7% of its comparisons, Poiesz 24.0%. Mind n, though: Dirk is compared on 4,440 products, Albert Heijn on 7,889. A wider overlapping range makes a high percentage harder to reach.
Per category: who wins where?
The same calculation, limited to one category, shown only when it holds at least 30 comparable products. Dirk wins all 18 categories. The strongest result: meat, chicken & fish, where Dirk has the lowest price for 92.6% of 68 products. The closest: pets, with 52.9% for Dirk.

How we calculate this
Mandje only compares products that are sold at several supermarkets in exactly the same form. For each such product we check which chain has the lowest price; if two chains tie, both get a point. The percentage is the share of comparisons a chain wins, and n is the number of products that percentage rests on. The figures are recalculated every night. Aldi, Lidl and Ekoplaza mostly sell own brands that no other chain carries, so they cannot be compared.
We use the price you pay today, so running offers count: a chain with many offers in a given week comes out better than in a quiet week. In total, today's percentages rest on 44,783 comparisons. The full table, refreshed every night, is on the price index page.
What this means for your shopping
That Dirk wins the most comparisons does not mean your basket is always cheapest there. Three things decide that: what you buy, which offers run this week and which own brands you are happy with. This week there are 10,902 offers across the 10 chains; a product that is normally cheapest at Dirk can cost less on offer at Hoogvliet.
In practice: do your regular shopping at a chain high in the ranking that also scores well in the categories you spend most on, and pick up the offers elsewhere. This week's offers per chain are in supermarket deals this week, and per chain on the pages for Dirk, Hoogvliet and DekaMarkt.
For your own list, Mandje works it out
The average says little about your basket: Dirk wins 79.7% of the comparisons, so for the rest another chain is cheaper, and which one differs per product and per week. Mandje works that out per list. Add your groceries and you see at which of the 10 supermarkets the whole list is cheapest this week, what you pay per store, and per product the price per kilo, the price history and the running offer. Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest supermarket in the Netherlands?
Going by the prices of 1 October 2026, Dirk: the lowest price for 79.7% of 4,440 comparable products. Then Hoogvliet (59.6%) and DekaMarkt (43.6%). The figures are recalculated every night.
Aren't Lidl and Aldi cheaper?
They may well be, but it cannot be measured product by product. Lidl, Aldi and Ekoplaza mostly sell own brands that no other chain carries, so there is no identical product to compare the price with. That is why they have no percentage, not a zero. For your own groceries, the app compares the price per kilo or litre of comparable products instead.
Is Albert Heijn expensive?
On 1 October 2026, Albert Heijn has the lowest price for 42.7% of its comparable products, against 79.7% for Dirk. It has 1,204 stores and the widest range, and its weekly Bonus offers can still make single products the cheapest anywhere.
